Getting Started

Welcome to CodeShare (Historical)

CodeShare was a platform for developers to share and collaborate on code snippets. Founded in 2012, the service operated until 2019, providing tools for programmers to easily share their code, receive feedback, and discover solutions to common programming challenges.

Platform Overview

The CodeShare platform consisted of several key components:

  • Code Snippets: The core feature allowing users to share pieces of code
  • Collections: Groups of related snippets organized by theme or project
  • Collaboration Tools: Comments, stars, and sharing options
  • User Profiles: Showcasing a user's snippets and activity
  • Search and Discovery: Finding useful code from other developers

Account Management

Account Types

CodeShare offered the following account types:

  • Basic (Free): Up to 25 public snippets, basic collaboration features
  • Pro ($6.99/month): Unlimited snippets, private sharing, priority support
  • Team ($19.99/month): Team collaboration features, admin controls, API access

Password Recovery

When active, CodeShare offered password recovery through the "Forgot Password" link on the login page. Users would receive an email with a temporary reset link valid for 24 hours.

Note: Password recovery is no longer available as the service has been discontinued.

Code Sharing

Creating Code Snippets

Users could create new code snippets by clicking the "New Snippet" button from the dashboard. The snippet editor included:

  • Code editor with syntax highlighting
  • Language selection (30+ languages supported)
  • Title and description fields
  • Tags for categorization
  • Visibility settings (public, private, or shared)

Supported Languages

CodeShare supported syntax highlighting for over 30 programming languages, including JavaScript, Python, Java, C/C++, PHP, Ruby, HTML/CSS, SQL, Swift, Go, and many more.

Collaboration

Commenting on Code

Users could comment on specific lines of code or on the entire snippet. Comments supported markdown formatting for code blocks, links, and basic text styling.

Sharing Options

CodeShare provided several ways to share snippets:

  • Public sharing: Anyone could view the snippet
  • Private links: Only people with the link could access
  • User-specific sharing: Share with specific CodeShare users
  • Embedding: Embed snippets in blogs or documentation
  • Social media sharing: Direct integration with Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn

Troubleshooting

Common Issues and Solutions

During its operation, users sometimes encountered these common issues:

Code editor not loading correctly
This was usually resolved by clearing browser cache or using a different browser.
Syntax highlighting not working
Users needed to correctly select the language from the dropdown menu.
Comments not appearing
This often required a page refresh or checking notification settings.

CodeShare was optimized for:

  • Google Chrome (version 50+)
  • Mozilla Firefox (version 45+)
  • Safari (version 10+)
  • Microsoft Edge

Internet Explorer was supported for basic functionality but with limited features.

We regret to inform you that as of 2024, all our operations have been permanently discontinued.
